A large number of trucks were passing through Hillsborough on Churton in violation of existing laws that prohibit through-truck use of this route resulting in increased risk to pedestrians and bikers, more traffic for regular motorists and noise and smoke for outdoor diners.
What we did
We worked for close to a year with the town to raise awareness of the issue and encouraged the town to find a way to address the problem. The police did a survey and found that about half of the trucks in town were there illegally. We continued to encourage Town Commissioners, planning staff and police to make addressing this issue a priority.
The Town Commissioners approved amendments to the law to make it more enforceable by the Police, companies known to have projects that could have trucks passing through town were notified and new project applicants will be made aware of the law as well.
